03Around the city

What there is to see.

Between appointments or once you’re resting, Antalya has plenty within easy reach — from a Roman old town to beaches and waterfalls.

Kaleiçi — the old town in Antalya

Kaleiçi — the old town

Antalya’s atmospheric old quarter, wrapped in Roman and Ottoman walls on the cliffs above the harbour.

Its narrow, cobbled lanes are lined with restored Ottoman mansions — many now boutique hotels, cafés and craft shops. You’ll pass Hadrian’s Gate, a marble triple arch built for the emperor’s visit in 130 AD, the fluted Yivli Minaret, and quiet courtyards shaded by orange trees. It’s a flat, easy area to explore on foot, and a lovely place to spend an evening on a rest day.

Backed by a landscaped promenade with cafés, showers and shaded seating, Konyaaltı is rated for its water quality. The clear, deep-blue Mediterranean and the mountain backdrop make it one of the city’s favourite spots for a gentle walk or a quiet afternoon, with sun loungers and beach clubs along its length.

Düden Waterfalls in Antalya

Düden Waterfalls

Two sets of falls fed by the Düden river — one set inland, one dropping straight into the sea.

The Upper Düden falls sit in a green park northeast of the centre, where a path leads behind the cascade through a cool cave. The Lower Düden falls plunge around 40 metres off the cliffs into the Mediterranean — best seen from a viewing terrace or a short coastal boat trip. Both make easy half-day outings.

Aspendos in Antalya

Aspendos

One of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the world, about an hour east of the city.

Built in the 2nd century AD, its stage building and seating for roughly 15,000 survive almost intact, and the acoustics are still remarkable — it hosts an opera and ballet festival each summer. Nearby you can also see the remains of a Roman aqueduct and the ancient city itself.

The Old Harbour in Antalya

The Old Harbour

The Roman-era marina tucked into the cliffs directly below Kaleiçi.

Once the city’s trading port, the horseshoe harbour is now a marina for yachts and wooden gulets. Cafés and fish restaurants line the quay, and short boat tours leave from here along the coast and towards the Düden falls. The walk down from the old town — and back up at sunset — is one of Antalya’s nicest.

The Bazaar in Antalya

The Bazaar

Markets and covered arcades for spices, textiles, tea and Turkish delight.

In and around Kaleiçi you’ll find a traditional bazaar and open-air markets selling saffron and spices, dried fruit and nuts, leather, ceramics and jewellery. It’s a relaxed place to pick up gifts, sample lokum (Turkish delight) and drink a glass of çay, and vendors are well used to international visitors.
